THE VIKINGS PROJECT:TRUE NORSEMEN

THE VIKINGS PROJECT:TRUE NORSEMEN

My dear young historians! Welcome to a new research project to bring together all the basics you have learned so far with fresh research to create the Viking Project: True Norsemen. My goal with this project is for each of you to experience the excitement that comes from investigating clues from the past and turning this into a presentation that reflects your perspective and your style.

This project will be challenging AND it will be fun!

In class you were separated into seven groups of four. Each group will choose a topic (I have included ideas below) and you will let me know by leaving a comment on the Viking blog in which you will inform me of the following:

                                  *names of research partners

*name of project and its research goals

*a brief description of the media platform you will be using for your presentation

*a statement naming the division of labor between the four members for which they will be responsible.

Each group member will create a Google docs document that describes the project from the perspective of their role that includes the learning they have constructed for their research group.

Below you will find the necessary components of this assignment. The Viking Project will take one week to complete with presentations beginning the following Monday. Each group will have twenty minutes of class time to confer with their group and work on their Google Chromes. Each day I expect an email log that keeps me informed of your progress and asks questions of me for guidance.
Get Busy and Enjoy!

CA Standards 7.6: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Europe.

PROJECT
EXPECTATIONS RUBRIC
Viking Timeline Project
Research group is expected to construct a well-researched timeline that will include the following:
  • pictorial representations of persons/events
  • graphics
  • brief descriptions of events on timeline
  • timeline will include major events of trade and invasion as well as discovery, and societal evolution.
  • citations of information and graphics used
  • names of research partners and their contributions
  • A journal log of the group’s experience that will be emailed to me.

Viking Journey Mapping Project
Research group will chart the travels of invasion, trade, and exploration. A well researched mapping project will include the following:
  • graphic arts to depict longboats in travel.
  • Depict major timeline events that occurred during their travels
  • Map will be either digitally constructed or constructed with paper or other media. Be creative! If you use media other than digital, be sure to photo/scan a picture of it.
  • Graphics with color and information expected on a map. You must include accurate details of ship and maps for the era.
  • citations of information used.
  • a journal log of the group’s experience that will be emailed to me.
Viking Customs Project
Research group will create, digitally or through other media, a diorama of what life was like for Vikings: their experiences as individuals, warriors, and families; their village customs, their religious customs (and movement to Christianity); farming customs, marriage, children, funeral and birth customs; warfare practices, crafts and tools, etc. Be creative! A well researched Customs Project will include:
  • Multimedia pictorial diorama either digital or other media (remember to photo/scan non digital presentation.
  • Creative use of art and graphics, including audio/visual or textual descriptions.
  • Will include detailed information of all attributes that are included.
  • Citations of research information.
A journal log of the groups progress that is emailed to me.
Archaeology of Viking Artifacts
This research group will engage in a two-fold project. In a well-researched project evidence will be presented such that they will first, digitally gather Viking artifacts and tell the story of each one-its use, the time period it was used, and how it compares to its era. The second part involves reporting and describing archaeological digs with descriptions of what they found and their historical significance. This included longboats. You will identify the archaeologists and their teams. Be sure to accurately date these expeditions. Also it is important that you accurately cite research performed and summarize their findings. This research may be presented in any fashion including PowerPoint, Google Presentation, etc.
A journal log of the groups progress that is emailed to me. An especially well researched paper will include a section on the development, building, and use of the longboat.

RESOURCES FOR YOUR USE
Key concepts for this project are well-documented evidence and creativity. To this end I have included several research links to the right. PLEASE SHARE any others you find that are useful. Just remember to document everything in APA. There is a link for that as well.

This project presentation is meant to be creative. The name of the game is communication. Ask yourselves what medium(s) can I use to best deliver what I want to communicate to my learning community. You may create PowerPoint presentations, Google Presentations. You may create a podcast or webcast, you may create blogs. Blogs are an excellent way to ground your project while at the same time act as a platform for any type of multimedia representations.

You may also choose to create with media that includes paper, markers, paint, graphic boards, etc. These also carry the potential for communicating meaning and involve great amounts of creativity.

Conclusion: Speaking of Assessment
First, let me remind you that each group must email me daily with a progress report/log. Also, and this will garner extra points, having a virtual meeting place is great for your project partners to discuss work. Simply invite me to share and participate in this community.

Finally, after the presentations, when everyone has had the opportunity to learn the many aspects of Viking experience, culture, and influence on Europe, each group is required to fill out the Viking Study guide provided by the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The link is on the right. When you are on the site, click on the History Guide.

I am excited to see your work. Please keep me in your loops daily.

Go for it!
